On November 7, Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) struck the Philippines and caused massive death and destruction. Relief efforts worldwide were activated to help the victims. FALEO-San Diego set up donation centers at all San Diego Police Department area stations and at all the floors of Headquarters. There were also donation boxes at the National City Police Department and DHS/Customs and Border Protection stations. Donation boxes were placed so people could donate canned foods, clothing, shoes, medicine, etc.
LBC, a shipping company, announced that they would provide free shipping to the Philippines until November 30. It normally costs $70 to ship one box. On Nov. 29, a City Facilities flatbed truck was used to pick-up all boxes from area stations and delivered to Headquarters. San Diego County Metro Services and the Fire Department also dropped off items at Headquarters.
All items were sorted into usable and non-usable goods. Usable items were packed into shipping boxes, while non-usable items were donated to Goodwill. In all, a total of 32 large boxes were delivered to LBC. LBC employees commented that it was the largest donation they received from any one person or entity.
$1085.00 in monetary donations were also collected and sent.
Thank you to everyone were involved in this special event!!
